The race for Paris: Will more armed police and more cameras make the city safer?

With France preparing to vote in the first round of municipal elections on Sunday, Paris has become a battleground between left- and right-wing forces fighting to shape the capital’s future. And as Parisians increasingly place public safety at the top of their concerns, candidates from across the spectrum have pledged to pour more funds into the city’s municipal police force and surveillance system – measures that have shown little evidence of actually tackling crime.

Paris is the capital and largest city of France, with an estimated city population of 2.04 million in an area of 105.4 km2 (40.7 sq mi), and a metropolitan population of 13.2 million as of January 2026.
