'Race to the border' as Islamic State and JNIM clash in Niger

For the first time, the Islamic State Al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM have clashed in West Africa’s Niger. While previous confrontations between the two jihadist groups had taken place in the tri-border area with Mali and Burkina Faso, they are now spreading toward a new border region between Niger, Nigeria, and Benin, in what France 24’s Wassim Nasr describes as a “race to the border” as the two groups vie for resources and recruits.

Islamic State

The Islamic State (IS), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and by its Arabic acronym Daesh, is a transnational Salafi jihadist militant organisation and internationally unrecognized quasi-state. IS occupied significant territory in Iraq and Syria in 2013, but lost most of it between 2017 and 2019. In 2014, the group proclaimed itself to be a worldwide caliphate, and claimed religious and political authority over all Muslims worldwide, a claim not accepted by the vast majority of Muslims. It is designated as a terrorist organisation by the United Nations and many countries around the world, including Muslim countries.

Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin is a Salafi Jihadist organisation in the Maghreb and West Africa formed by the merger of Ansar Dine, al-Mourabitoun and the Saharan branch of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Its leaders swore allegiance to Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Niger

Niger, oficial Republica Niger, este o țară din Africa de Vest, fără ieșire la mare, denumită astfel după fluviul Niger. Nigerul se mărginește cu Nigeria și Benin la sud, cu Burkina Faso și Mali la vest, cu Algeria și Libia la nord și cu Ciad la est.
