On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, triggering a massive tsunami that inundated coastal areas, including the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The tsunami caused a nuclear meltdown, releasing radioactive materials into the environment and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents.
