Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is becoming an increasing health concern in the US. The condition develops after a bite from certain types of ticks, most notably the Lone Star tick, which transmits the alpha-gal sugar molecule into the person's system. This can lead to an allergic reaction, sometimes severe or even fatal, upon consumption of red meat or other mammal-derived products.

Alpha-gal syndrome

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), also known as alpha-gal allergy or mammalian meat allergy (MMA), is an acquired allergy characterized by a delayed onset of symptoms after ingesting foods and medicines containing the carbohydrate molecule galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose ("alpha-gal"). Reactions also occur from skin contact, environmental exposures, and intravenous therapy. AGS results from tick bites, and possibly bites from other insects and parasites.

Amblyomma americanum

Amblyomma americanum, also known as the lone star tick, northeastern water tick, turkey tick, and cricker tick, is a type of tick indigenous to much of the eastern United States and Mexico that bites painlessly and commonly goes unnoticed, remaining attached to its host for as long as seven days until it is fully engorged with blood. It bites aggressively, and its larvae may transfer themselves to skin from discarded clothing that is put back on. The sexually dimorphic adult female lone star tick bears a silvery-white, somewhat star-shaped spot near the center of the posterior portion of its dorsal shield (scutum); adult males conversely have varied white streaks or spots around the margins of their shields.
